Call-to-action
Cleaning of Clay Brickwork
If there is just a light dusting of salts, we recommend leaving them to weather away naturally. However if there are more stubborn stains, such as mortar staining, then careful use of acid cleaner is OK following the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep brushing to a minimum and rinse with low pressure water. On a sandfaced brick harsh abrasion or high-pressure washing may scour the surface and possibly alter the colour and texture of the brick. Try it out on a small, inconspicuous area first.
Bricks Suitable For Use Below DPC.
Bricks that sit below the DPC will be exposed to potential saturation from water migrating from the ground up through the brickwork. In such a situation it is important to choose bricks that are both Frost Resistant (F2) and have low Active Soluble Salts content (S2) as defined in EN771-1 the Standard for Clay Masonry Units. All our facing brick products meet the F2 and S2 classifications and as such are suitable for use in locations subject to severe exposure. This includes the areas just above and below ground level (approximately 2 courses above and below). Bricks used deeper below ground level, whilst equally saturated, are less likely to be subjected to freezing conditions.
Sealant on Brickwork
We do not recommend putting sealant onto brickwork. If moisture manages to get into the brickwork, it cannot escape and may get trapped between the face of the brick and the sealant, which can then appear white in colour. This looks worse than the dampness that it is trying to prevent and is very difficult to remove.
Which Way Up to Lay Bricks with Frogs
A frog is the indentation in the top of a handmade or stock brick. It is always advisable to lay bricks with frog upwards, there are several reasons for this: Laying frog up ensures the frog is fully filled with mortar which could otherwise compromise the overall strength of the brickwork. If the “Smiles” (folds) are laid upside down, there is a possibility that dirt could accumulate in them which could encourage plant / moss growth in some situations.
